First GTA wallop of winter

A winter weather travel advisory is in effect for Oakville and the rest of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, advising of snow accumulations near five centimetres today.

Meanwhile… folks to the north can expect another snow thrashing

Round two is on the way for Muskoka area as snow squalls coming off the Great Lakes are expected to bring heavy snow to a swath of the province.

Registration for the Town of Oakville’s winter recreation & culture programming starts at 7am this morning.

Car break-in suspects caught

Halton Police have arrested four men from Brampton accused of breaking into cars in Oakville. On November 24^th, 25 vehicles were entered near Rosehill Dr. and Shady Glen Dr. On December 1^st there was a report of another theft, and the suspects were caught.

Mid-town meeting

The Province of Ontario and a Distrikt Developments are holding a public session on December 12^th from 4-7pm at the Holiday Inn about the proposed Midtown development. The controversial project could see 11 high-rise towers built on 5 hectares of land near the Oakville GO Station. Local advocacy group We Love Oakville calls the proposed plan “the biggest issue Oakville will ever face.”

Guide dog dollars

The federal government is investing $1.3-million to support a new guide dog training school in Oakville.

Auditor rips Ontario Place redevelopment

The Auditor general says the cost of the project surged by $1.8B and the process for picking tenants wasn’t transparent or fair.

Ad spending spree

The Auditor general also says the province spent three times more money on government advertising last year than it did the year before.  She also thought many of the ads were partisan.

Walking pneumonia surge

The numbers are in, and the province has been seeing a massive increase in walking pneumonia cases.  733 tests have come back positive in the province so far this year.  That compares to just 23 last year.

HOH OHO

Canada Post says it’s axed its deadline for letters to Santa, which was this Friday.  Once the strike is over, they’ll still get the letters there, but there’s no guarantee when you’ll hear back.
