The Town of Oakville has declared a “significant weather event” due to the storm and says plowing of roads and sidewalks might take longer than normal. You can check the Plow Tracker here.

The age group most likely to want to join the U.S.

The Hub has a commentary titled “Almost half of my generation wants Canada to join the U.S.  Here’s why”, in which the Gen Z author points to a recent Ipsos poll showing 43% of Canadians aged 18-34 would choose to become American if they got U.S. citizenship and their assets were converted to U.S. dollars.  The author cites the death of the homeownership dream and a lack of economic opportunity as major reasons for the result.

🟦 PC Leader Doug Ford had no events scheduled yesterday.

🟥 Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie says Doug Ford’s trip to Washington was a partisan one and not appropriate in the middle of an election.

🟧 NDP Leader Marit Stiles was in Sudbury to announce her northern platform.  She agrees with Crombie’s position on Ford’s Washington trip and is asking the Integrity Commissioner to look into it.

Amputation risk leads to cooler recall

Igloo is recalling more than a million 90-quart coolers in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico because they can pinch a user’s fingers causing amputation and crushing risks. The company has received a dozen reports of injuries. You can check out the specific models here. Owners should stop using the coolers and contact Igloo for a free replacement handle.

Court fight over delayed luggage

CBC News reports that Air Canada is taking a passenger to court after a regulator ordered it to pay him $2,000 for delayed luggage.  Air Canada says the regulator didn’t properly apply or interpret the rules when making the decision so it’s appealing.  The passenger says he has no plans to hire a lawyer to win back what the regulator says he’s owed.  One expert told CBC News: “Litigation lawyers aren’t cheap… It puts customers at a real disadvantage.”

Watch out for fake $100’s

York Police say keep an eye out for fake $100 Canadian bills.  They’ve had 14 complaints from people who received the phony bills after selling items online.

Holiday hippo death lawsuit

An American man is suing a tour operator after his wife was killed by a hippo while on safari in Zambia last year.  The suit alleges the woman was watching the animal during a bush walk when it attacked her.  The suit is for $15,000 and accuses the tour operator of not providing a safe environment.

Humpback whale swallows and spits out kayaker

The whale briefly swallowed a 24-year-old kayaker last Saturday during a father-son excursion out on the icy waters around Chile’s southernmost Patagonia region. The terrifying moment captured on camera by the kayaker’s father.

Tax holiday: “a flop” for small businesses

Global News reports that the GST/HST break didn’t do much to boost small business sales across the country.  The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says only 5% of members saw stronger sales compared to the same time last year.  Hospitality businesses (i.e. restaurants) were the most likely to see any increase.

What Canadians are willing to boycott

According to a Leger poll, 56% of Canadians say they won’t travel to the U.S. or have cancelled plans, 60% say they’ll stop buying American alcohol, but only 28% say they’ll cancel U.S. streaming services like Disney and Netflix.
