‘Stay tuned’ for a possible provincial election

Looks like it could come any time now. Premier Doug Ford said ‘Stay tuned’ when asked Wednesday at Queen’s Park if an election call is coming. Reports say Ford will call an election as early as next week. A new Leger poll shows the Conservatives would easily win if an election were held today (46% support), with the party 24 points ahead of Bonnie Crombie’s Liberals (22% support), and the NDP sitting at 19% support.

Who’s in: Retaliate dollar-for-dollar?

“Team Canada” met again to figure out how to respond to the threat of tariffs on February 1^st, and according to The Canadian Press leaders are “leaning toward matching tariffs on the U.S. – but not all premiers agree.”  As usual, Doug Ford is all in.  Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith says things are “more positive this week” and there’s “general agreement on the need to focus more on constructive, proactive diplomacy with U.S. lawmakers rather than escalating rhetoric.”  They’ve got a little more than a week left to figure this out.

Work from home, if you still have a job: Poilievre

Pierre Poilievre says he wants to cut the federal public service, which has swelled by 110,000 employees under the Liberal government.  The Conservative leader believes the increase in staff levels hasn’t improved service for Canadians.  He’s also not fussed if those who will remain want to work from home, he told Radio-Canada: “The place of work is not important to me; it’s about the result. I believe there needs to be proof that the work is done.”

Oakville’s population keeps growing

Oakville’s population hit 238,716 last year according to StatsCan, which is a 2.7% increase from the year before, and a 9% increase from 2020.

Call to show up for town’s Midtown declaration

We Love Oakville and the Trafalgar Chartwell Residents Association is calling on Oakville residents to attend the January 27^th town council meeting to show their support for a motion by two local councillors clearly stating that the town does not “endorse or approve” the province’s Transit Oriented Community (TOC) plan for Midtown.

Mittens the cat (pictured with mom) became quite the jetsetter this month when her cage was overlooked in a plane cargo hold and she made three trips in 24 hours between New Zealand and Australia.

Tax tips for digital nomads

Have laptop, will work and travel?  Well, you still need to pay your taxes. Nerdwallet has a couple of tax tips for so-called digital nomads who make their money while truly working remotely.  The article suggests paying attention to international tax treaties, claiming foreign tax credits if possible, and to consider incorporating.

Oatmeal vs Eggs

Health.com squares off the two popular breakfast foods, and frankly, they’re both good for you!  Eggs are high in protein which might keep you feeling fuller for longer, they’re also low in calories, and relatively cheap and easy to make.  Oatmeal is high in iron, fibre, folate, and Vitamin A.  The conclusion is they can both help with weight loss, but for muscle gain eggs are a better protein choice.

Bird flu vaccine stockpiles

Wired.com reports that the U.S. is sitting on a stockpile of millions of H5N1 vaccines but isn’t deploying them because the risk of the disease is too low.  There have been 67 U.S. human bird flu cases, and none of them are linked to human-to-human transmission.  Experts say if it comes to it, a more targeted tactic might be to roll out vaccines just to farm workers and others at risk, but that still seems premature.
