Trump to announce 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum today and doubles-down on 51st state talk

Here they come. U.S. President Donald Trump will formally announce 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports today for Canada and Mexico. Trump made the comments on board Air Force One as he was heading to the Super Bowl. Trump also said he wants to see Canada become a state due to the unsubstantiated claim the U.S. is "paying $200 billion a year" to Canada.

On the provincial campaign trail

🟦 PC Leader Doug Ford spent the weekend touting his plans to protect the economy and border in the face of proposed U.S. tariffs.

🟧 NDP Leader Marit Stiles focused on affordability, promising a monthly grocery rebate for lower and middle income families.

🟥 Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie is promising that a special investigator will look into the Ford government’s changed plans for the Greenbelt and the closure of the Science Centre.

The PCs and Liberals are both forking out big bucks to run ads during the Super Bowl.

Flu cases reach an all-season high

Positivity rates for flu testing in the 2024-25 season are at an all-season high and have already surpassed the 2023-24 flu season’s peak, according to national data. There were 8,586 detections for influenza in the week of Feb. 1, most concentrated among Canadians aged 65 or older.

Harry can rest easy. President Trump has ruled out deporting the British royal. Trump telling the New York Post: “He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.” Harry and Meghan have voiced disapproval of Trump over the years, Meghan calling the president “divisive” and “misogynistic”.

Planning ahead for Family Day

Oakville’s Community and Recreations Centers will be busy on Family Day.

The Town of Oakville says it’s got more than 100 free activities planned at places across town to celebrate Family Day. Fire Station tours, glow-in-the dark badminton, and dance parties are just a couple of the options in addition to the usual skating, swimming and fitness options. Find out more here.
