Town staff say province’s Midtown plan has “no community benefit”

Town of Oakville staff have sent an 88-page report to Queen’s Park with an opinion of the province’s plan to implement a Transit Oriented Community (TOC) in Midtown with 11 high-rise towers.  “Overall, the TOC proposal appears as a private development proposal with very little to no community benefit for either the Town or the Province,” the report states. “It does not appear to achieve the Transit Oriented Community objectives identified by the Minister of Infrastructure and it does not implement current Official Plan policies nor draft policies for Midtown.”

The town is updating the Old Oakville Heritage Conservation District Plan and is having a public meeting about it on February 3rd at 6:30 at Town Hall. The Heritage district was established 40 years ago, and in that time several changes have been made to the Ontario Heritage Act. The town is looking for input as it updates the plan to ensure it complies with provincial legislation.

Doug Ford says U.S. tariffs could cost 500,000 Ontario jobs depending on which sectors are hit.  The premiers are meeting with the PM today, but with inauguration day less than a week away Ford is voicing his frustration with the federal government and the lack of a finalized Canadian response plan saying, “I’m going to be blunt: They need to get their act together.”

Crombie calls out Ford’s ‘mandate’ mission

Yesterday we told you how Premier Ford is prepared to go to the polls to ask Ontarians for a new mandate if the province is considering major spending to offset the impact of tariffs. Ontario Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie is now weighing in saying Ford just wants an election to “cling to power”. She made the comments Tuesday on The Greg Brady Show on AM640 Toronto.

The race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau narrowed further on Tuesday when Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne and former B.C. premier Christy Clark both bowed out, while Government House leader Karina Gould signaled she's in. We’re still waiting for official word from Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland.

More cell phone competition on the way

Cogeco says it’s going to start rolling out cell phone services soon and bundle them with its existing wireline products.  In the summer, Cogeco inked a deal with an unnamed wireless operator to deliver the service.  The company is using a so-called mobile virtual network, which allows it to offer cell service through a rival’s network.
