The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board says the Greater Toronto Area housing market experienced a transitionary year in 2024. Annual sales were up slightly compared to 2023, and new listings were up significantly year-over-year. And…buyers benefited from substantial negotiating power on price.

Been in a fender bender? Don’t rush to collision reporting centre just yet

As of Jan 1 there is a new threshold for reporting collisions in Ontario. The damage-dollar-threshold to contact police has gone from $2,000 to $5,000. The province says the move will reduce burdens for Ontarians, law enforcement and commercial operators by eliminating the requirement to report minor collisions.

Man arrested in stolen car four days after release on bail

Halton Police have arrested a man suspected of driving a stolen car in Oakville who had just been released on bail for similar offenses in York Region four days earlier. Police Chief Stephen Tanner expressed his frustration with the lack of deterrents saying, “As long as the gains outweigh the risks, and organized groups continue to profit from this lucrative crime by shipping stolen vehicles out of the country through our large shipping ports, we should not expect it to stop. Steal a car, through a home invasion or otherwise, get arrested, get released, and repeat the cycle again.”

A man is in police custody after allegedly setting a vacant Oakville church on fire late Monday morning. The incident happened at the site of the former Generations Church of the Nazarene on Bronte Rd.

Capital gains changes benched

Those controversial capital gains changes proposed by the federal government are dead thanks to the proroguing of parliament.   The changes would have seen the capital gains inclusion rate for individuals increase to 2/3 from 50% for gains over $250k.

We’ve heard of the benefits of plant-based diets, but a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition, Health, and Aging underscores the importance of the quality of such a diet.  It compared diets of “healthful” plant foods like wholegrains, fruits and vegetables to a diet of “unhealthful” plant foods like refined grains, fruit juices and potatoes.  The “unhealthful” diet was associated with an increase in frailty in men, particularly with low incomes.

As of Wednesday, visitors travelling on a Canadian passport will now need to pay 10-pounds for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they arrive.  48 countries that don’t require a visa now require an ETA.  You can apply online before you go.
