Election call on Wednesday?

Several outlets are reporting that Doug Ford is going to call an election on Wednesday, and we’d vote on Thursday, February 27th.  If true, the election would be 18-months early.  Ford already has a majority government but has been saying for weeks that he’d want a new mandate in order to make decisions in response to the Trump presidency.

$1.8-million school board deficit

The Halton District School Board is facing a $1.8-million dollar deficit for the next school year. It’s required to run a balanced budget, and it’s looking for public input on priorities before making any cuts. You can learn more here.

Trump to World Economic Forum: U.S. doesn’t need Canada’s oil, gas, autos or lumber

U.S. President Trump virtually addressed the Forum Thursday afternoon, telling the crowd ‘Light is shining all over the world since the election’ adding ‘America is back and open for business.’ It was during the question and answer session Trump made the disquieting comments, including a mention again of Canada becoming the 51st state (for Canada comments scrub to 41:30).

Speed cameras are now live

The Town of Oakville says its 14 Automated Speed Enforcement Cameras are now live, and it’s put a map on its website so you know where they are. The cameras rotate locations, and signs will go up in the next locations 90 days before installation.

Tesla jacks Canadian prices

If you want a Tesla, you should order it now.  The EV company’s Canadian website has a big yellow banner at the top letting you know that prices are going up on February 1st.  Model 3’s will go up by up to $9,000, Models S, X, and Y by up to $4,000.  The price hikes come after the Canadian government also “paused” its $5,000 rebate on EVs because the program had run out of money.

Canadians are “financially paralyzed”: RBC Poll

According to a new RBC poll, 55% of Canadians say they’re financially paralyzed, 48% say they can no longer maintain their standard of living, and 29% say their finances are in a constant state of chaos.  The bank says higher costs are eroding cash flow, and RBC is encouraging people to talk to their bank for financial advice if they’re in a tough spot.

Got sore eyes from too much screen time?

Associated Press has a feature on screen breaks and setting up your workstation properly to get some relief from eye strain.  Tips include following the “20-20-20” rule, which involves taking a break every 20 minutes to look at something that’s 20 feet away for 20 seconds.  Other suggested ways of getting relief include using a bigger monitor and increasing font sizes.
