Environment Canada: Be prepared for very cold conditions

Environment Canada says much of Ontario is under prolonged extreme cold warnings, with wind chill values hovering around -40 in many areas. We’re told to be prepared for temps colder than we’ve seen in the last several years. Right now there are no watches or warnings for Toronto or GTHA.

Big sinkhole in the city!

A large sinkhole at the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village continues to disrupt traffic while construction crews work on a repair. Police initially released an alert about the hazard Saturday morning, but there is no word on when repairs will be completed.

Day 1: President Trump’s to-do list

It’s Inauguration Day, and the ceremony kicks off around 11:30, with the actual swearing in happening around noon.  A list of new orders are expected to be signed right away including those 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, the launch of a mass deportation program, January 6^th pardons, accelerated approvals for new energy projects, and an order which ends automatic citizenship for kids born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.

Heading to D.C.

The Canadian Press reports a bunch of Canadian leaders are expected to be in Washington for the inauguration.  Among them Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce and Trade Minister Vic Fedeli, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Trade Minister Mary Ng.  The politicians are expected to continue meetings with U.S. counterparts while navigating the proposed tariffs.

TikTok: On again

After briefly shutting down in the U.S. over the weekend over national security concerns, TikTok ramped up again on Sunday, and the company thanked President Trump for the change in direction.  Trump says he’s going delay the start of the ban in order to “make a deal to protect our national security”.  He also wants 50% U.S. ownership of the app.

Mini pastry alert: More than 60 sick, 17 in hospital due to salmonella outbreak

The Public Health Agency of Canada says 61 cases of salmonella across the country, including 17 that have required hospitalization, have been linked to recalled mini pastries. PHAC says 33 of the 61 cases are in Quebec, 21 in Ontario, four in B.C., two in Alberta and one in New Brunswick.

Liberal leadership race update: Freeland heckled, Gould carbon tax freeze, Carney endorsement

Former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland has launched her bid to be the next federal Liberal leader while hecklers interrupted her speech. Meanwhile, candidate Karina Gould says she plans to freeze the federal carbon price. And Mark Carney gets a key endorsement from Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly.

Oldest living Canadian dies

Hazel Skuce died on January 3^rd, making her 112 years and 331 days old.  A well-loved teacher in Brandon, Manitoba, Skuce didn’t have any specific tips or advice for a long life.  “I’m just happy today and the next day, and so on,” she told the Brandon Sun in 2019.  The title of oldest living Canadian now passes to Margaret Romans who is about five weeks younger than Skuce.

Halton Police Vulnerable Person Registry

Halton Regional Police are using Alzheimer’s Awareness month to let us know about the service’s Vulnerable Person Registry.  It’s a service that allows you to register details of anyone with a medical, mental health or physical condition.  It can help police locate someone or interact with them in case of an emergency, for example if they wander or have issues communicating.  You can learn more about the program here.

Buyer beware:  Cheap Florida condos

Associated Press reports a flood of cheap older condos hitting the market in South Florida.  88% of condos on the market are more than 30 years old and are going for an average price of $225,000 compared to newer units going for between $1.2-1.9-million.  Following a deadly condo collapse in 2021, all towers over 30-years old are required to have a structural inspection by the end of this year.  Those inspections often reveal repair issues with six-figure repair bills for individual owners.  Insurance rates are also becoming an issue for owners now looking to sell.

Taking Antibiotics?  What to eat or avoid

We’ve all heard how antibiotics can do a number on gut bacteria.  Today.com speaks to dieticians about what you should eat or avoid to minimize gut disruption.  In addition to the usual probiotic suggestions like yogurt, the dieticians suggest prebiotic options like bananas, apples, leeks and beans.  Grapefruit, fried, and spicy foods are best avoided.

Canadian bird flu patient update

The 13-year-old B.C. girl who was the first and only known human case of H5N1 bird flu in Canada has been released from hospital after two months. Her doctor tells CBC News that the child was intubated and put on life support until she started improving.  He also says the case has made him concerned about the risk of more human cases.
